So you’ve probably heard that Dropbox recently dropped the AWS cloud.
Dropbox had been building out its own infrastructure for awhile and was ready to take control back, build its own platform and manage its own cloud infrastructure. As a cloud storage company with 500 million users, it makes sense for DropBox to operate its own customized cloud infrastructure and control its own technology. (We wrote about an increased number of companies doing this in a recent blog — Get in Control with NYI Cloud.)
But if you don’t have 500 million users, does this move from public cloud to private cloud or a hybrid config make sense for your company? Here are a couple of reasons that Dropbox moved away from a public cloud solution — these might apply to your business, too.
Money — Let’s face it; money is a key driver for pretty much everything we do. The more something costs, the more we have to find ways to pay for it — oftentimes we’re applying savings from one project toward another. Sometimes with public cloud instances, the surprise charges seem to pile up out of nowhere. As the number and size of your workloads increase, costs can quickly spiral and before you know it, you’re facing one hefty bill. With careful planning, you can regain control over your IT environment AND save money by moving to a private cloud or hybrid configuration and easing away from a public cloud service.
Flexibility — A hybrid approach can maximize your flexibility. Not all apps work well in all environments. Working with a hosting provider (such as NYI!) that offers several options can be very beneficial, as your IT requirements change and evolve over time.
